We were recently contacted by someone who wanted a quote on “fixing†her website, an online store for selling a range of products.
When we looked at her site, here is what we found:
• The design was very unprofessional, and did not fit the products she was selling.
• The navigation was confusing and some links were actually broken.
• The pages had not been optimized for search engines. The designer had simple loaded the products into a "keywords" metatag (which modern search engines disregard).
• There was no informative content to draw users to the site.
• There was not a single external link from any other website to her business site.
• The domain name was registered by the designer in their own name, rather than the client's name. The designer was also providing the hosting services, and told the client she could not move the site to another host.
The client had paid the designer over $4000, and had not made a single sale from her website.
Unfortunately, there are many stories like this. There is no licensing or certification for web designers, and as a result there any many unskilled and unscrupulous designers.
